miwa is the first Heisei-born solo singer-songwriter to reach number one with debut album

20 year old singer-songwriter and university student, miwa is enjoying a lot of success. Her debut album “guitarissimo”, which was released on April 6th, has sold 40,000 copies in its first week and has topped this week’s Oricon Albums Chart list. This is miwa’s first number one release since her debut single, ‘Don’t Cry Anymore,’ in March of 2010. “guitarissimo” is also the first debut album to reach number one on the weekly album chart by a solo artist born in the Heisei era.

miwa’s “guitarissimo” is also the first debut album by a singer-songwriter to reach number one since Moriyama Naotaro’s “Aratanaru Koushinryou wo Motomete”, which last occurred around six years and ten months ago. Her album is also the first debut album by a female singer-songwriter to top the charts since Onitsuka Chihiro’s “Insomnia” around 10 years ago.

In response to her achievement, miwa expressed, “I am surprised because I did not even imagine [achieving this] but I put my heart and soul into making this album and am very happy to have received such support from so many people. I want to continue making songs that will brighten the days of people who listen to them”.

Until now, miwa has released five singles. She had reached her previous all-time highest position of 8th with her third single “chAngE” back in September of 2010.
